Their new roads, relief roads and junctions are drawn in red over a detailed Ordnance Survey base, from long routes on the western and eastern edges of the town to new links and junctions threaded through the historic centre. The proposals were fiercely debated, and most of the inner relief roads were never built, which is a large part of why the medieval street pattern survives today. Reproduced by Entwistle Thorpe & Co., it is a substantial and readable record of a turning point in the city's planning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028560a_2546e7a8-d45e-4d63-862f-cdc1c3142e6f.jpg?v=1792148861
cambridge-outline-development-plan-101x75cm-holford-wright-1950-old-map-p-7-028565
Cambridge Outline Development Plan — 101x75cm — Holford & Wright 1950 old map

'Outline development plan'

The master plan for post-war Cambridge, this large and boldly coloured Outline Development Plan sets out the whole town as William Holford and Myles Wright proposed to shape it in 1950. Red-hatched university and college land, purple service industry, blue shopping centres, orange existing housing and hatched proposed borough and private housing spread out from the centre, contained by a green limit of urban expansion and crossed by the red lines of proposed roads. Its policy of restraint, holding growth within a firm limit, shaped the compact, green-belted Cambridge of the following decades. At more than a metre tall, Map 33 of their Cambridge Planning Proposals is the most comprehensive and decorative sheet in the report.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028565a_18171224-603e-48fe-b817-3abd12f6f69a.jpg?v=1792148879
