At 1:2,000,000, it covers California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and northern Mexico, combining coloured relief with airfields, radio beacons, air routes, terrain elevations and the new geography of prohibited, restricted and warning areas. Particularly striking is the Pacific Air Defense Identification Zone, extending offshore in bold blue lines: a cartographic expression of early Cold War vigilance, when approaching aircraft were required to identify themselves before reaching the continental coast. This third edition, compiled in August 1953 and revised with air information current to March 1956, belongs to the first generation of large-format charts designed for high-speed, high-altitude jet navigation. Its monumental size, dense technical overprint and vivid aeronautical symbols make it both a practical aviation document and a superb visual record of the birth of the American jet age.
