The road maps show it as a stopping place on the way to Chester: Ogilby's survey of 1675 follows the long road north from Ludlow through Shrewsbury, Gardner and Kitchin published later versions of the route, and Paterson's strips of 1785 and 1803 link the town with Newport and Malpas. The Ordnance Survey sheet of 1833 sets it in the plain of Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire. This triangulation, completed by 1790, together with the outbreak of war with France in 1793, acted as a catalyst for the surveying of England. The survey began in Kent and by the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 most of southern England had been mapped. By 1844, publication of the Old Series, one inch to one mile, was complete for the whole of Great Britain south of Preston and Hull.
