Lill was born at the salt-mining town of Wieliczka and was sent by Vienna to survey the Carpathians in 1823–27; he died at thirty-two, and his map was engraved by Ambroise Tardieu and published in Paris in 1833, in the first volume of the Mémoires de la Société géologique de France.
