The labelled buildings allowed researchers to reconstruct particular incidents involving dead or infected rats, sentinel guinea-pigs, fleas and human occupation. Their observations showed that infection took at least six weeks to move approximately 300 feet through the local rat population. This painstaking household investigation formed part of the response to the Third Plague Pandemic, which reached Bombay in 1896 and stimulated major advances in understanding bubonic plague transmission. The map is a remarkable document of early field epidemiology at the scale of individual dwellings.
