February marked the clear emergence of the city’s 1906 seasonal epidemic. Bombay had first been affected by the Third Plague Pandemic in 1896, after which bubonic plague recurred for many years. The map is a striking example of early disease mapping used to investigate the chronological and geographical connection between rat infection, flea transmission and human cases.
