Bombay had been the point of arrival in India of the Third Plague Pandemic in 1896, after which seasonal epidemics repeatedly affected the city. The continued mapping of both rat and human plague helped investigators understand how infection survived between epidemic peaks and confirmed the importance of rat fleas in transmission.
