Bridges, railways, wharves, shipping and major landmarks—including Bunker Hill and Harvard—are carefully labelled. Issued as an Extra Supplement to The Illustrated London News on 23 November 1872, the print appeared less than two weeks after the Great Boston Fire of 9–10 November. The image was evidently prepared before the disaster and therefore offers a detailed record of the pre-fire city at the moment reconstruction began. The finely cut wood engraving is characteristic of Sulman’s celebrated urban panoramas and survives here in unusually clean, broad-margined condition with its original centre fold.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/fr/products/bird-s-eye-view-of-boston-by-thomas-sulman-illustrated-london-news-1872-map-p-8-006994
