Antonino Cutrera’s 1900 cartogram grades Mafia presence municipality by municipality, distinguishing towns with high, lower, limited or no recorded activity. Three pale-green tints classify the productive intensity of the soil, inviting comparison between criminal influence and agricultural wealth. Cutrera was no armchair theorist. A public-security official, sociologist and criminologist, he combined police intelligence, newspapers and field experience to examine omertà, initiation rites, extortion, electoral influence and, most dangerously, the accommodation between Mafiosi, politicians and public officials. He did not meet a violent end; instead, his candour stalled his career. His research was belittled, promotions withheld and repeated transfers followed; after almost forty years he rose only to assistant commissioner. Published in Palermo in the first edition of La Mafia e i Mafiosi, one of the earliest systematic studies of the subject, the map remains important: modern historians continue to digitise and analyse its municipal evidence.
