Niebuhr shows the “so-called new castle” on the west side of the river, a round inhabited fort built, according to its inscription, in 1116 AH \/ c.1704–05, with a lower battery of brass and iron cannon and five smaller guns above. Opposite, on the east bank, he records an older unnamed castle and battery, deserted and associated locally with fear of spirits. The site is probably connected with the defensive-tower landscape remembered in the name Ezbet El-Borg \/ Izbat al-Burj, though Niebuhr gives no proper fort name.
