These doubts proved misplaced: a subsequent letter from Henry Rea, published in the June issue, confirmed the murders. Later Argentine revisionism portrayed the ringleader, Antonio Rivero, as a patriotic gaucho leading an uprising against British occupation, but Rea’s account records murder, wholesale plunder and the seizure of livestock, but no patriotic declaration, Argentine flag, attempt to restore Argentine government or attack upon a British garrison. The consensus historical interpretation instead associates the violence with grievances over wages, Vernet’s depreciated paper currency and working conditions within his former settlement.
