Customs facilities, merchant frontage, diplomatic compounds and accommodation show how foreign commerce and daily life occupied the waterfront. Nagasaki opened to general foreign trade in 1859 under the Ansei treaties, after two centuries in which Dutch commerce had been confined to Dejima. The map preserves that older enclave beside the multinational settlement replacing its exclusive role. By 1867 Dennys described growing trade in tea, silk, coal, vegetable wax and marine produce, while the foreign community remained small enough to map almost building by building.
