Bradley \u0026amp; Co.’s jetty, an old fort, pilot station, fishing stakes and the low-water line record the practical workings of the port. Swatow opened under the Treaty of Tientsin, with British and American consuls arriving in 1860. It had been a small settlement serving Chaozhou, thirty-five miles inland. Foreign merchants previously used Double Island as an unrecognised opium station. Attempts to lease a settlement failed amid local hostility in 1862, leaving the fragmented foreign presence mapped here. Nevertheless, Dennys recorded 1,169 vessel entries totalling 444,056 tons and trade worth about $13.3 million in 1865. Sugar exports alone reached 529,487 piculs. Other exports included tobacco and paper; beancake, cotton goods and opium came in. Published in 1867, the plan predates modern Shantou’s absorption of these river margins.
