Since opening in 1859, Yokohama had become the chief outlet for raw silk and tea and the principal meeting point for the shogunate, foreign ministers, merchants and warships. The canal defined and helped control the foreign quarter, where trade, diplomacy, accommodation and entertainment clustered around the landings. A printed note specifies that the buildings shown pre-date the catastrophic fire, adding that reconstruction was expected to preserve the street layout. Issued in 1867 during rebuilding and the final Tokugawa crisis, the plan preserves a precisely dated view of the first settlement immediately before destruction.
