Across the water stands Acunora (Akunoura) Steam Factory, a Dutch-assisted shogunal engineering works preceding the Mitsubishi Nagasaki shipyard. Nagasaki opened to general foreign trade in 1859 after centuries of restricted European contact. Dennys described a settlement with a half-mile frontage and bund, consulates, churches and merchant houses, exporting tea, silk, coal, vegetable wax and marine products, with growing direct trade to London. Imports included manufactured goods and metals. The Russian concession served principally as a naval sanitarium and housed no mercantile firms. Dutch engineers supervised Japanese artisans at the steam factory, repairing machinery for the shogunate’s modernising fleet. The plan records treaty-port commerce alongside early Japanese industrial development in the final year of Tokugawa government.
