A caption explains that the dark soil seen by a 1665 expedition gave the area its name, 'Het Zwarte Land'. Ashby surrounds the map with scrollwork, the Malmesbury arms, a wheatsheaf and a coastal still life of crayfish, fish, nets and a barrel.
