The walls enclosed three celebrated hills and extended for six to seven miles. Numbered residences, lettered hongs and a distance table identify consular, missionary and mercantile premises. Opened by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, Foochow offered direct access to Fujian black teas previously sent overland to Canton. Exports accelerated after an American firm established interior connections in 1855. Dennys counted about fifty foreign merchants and over one hundred foreign residents in 1865; tea exports reached 66 million lb in 1865–66, roughly two-thirds destined for Britain. A branch of the Oriental Bank and the Foochow Advertiser appeared in 1866. Ocean-going vessels stopped at Pagoda Anchorage, ten miles downstream; passengers continued by local boat to the consulate and hongs opposite Nantai.
