Poyang Lake, the Han River and Grand Canal show how central China’s producing regions connected with the coast. Published in 1867, it records the river only three years after the fall of the Taiping capital at Nanking. Article X of the 1858 Treaty of Tientsin provided for foreign merchant navigation and river ports, but Taiping occupation delayed implementation. An Anglo-Chinese expedition reached Hankow in 1858, and British consulates opened at Chinkiang, Kiu-kiang and Hankow in 1861. By the mid-1860s steamers carried manufactures inland and tea down to Shanghai, negotiating seasonal water-level changes, shoals and wrecks. Dennys drew on Thomas Blakiston’s 1862 Yangtze account, although direct dependence on Blakiston’s route plan remains unproved.
