The surveyed corridor follows the Arkansas River, Rio del Norte (Rio Grande) and Gila River, with dated camps, settlements, mountain ranges and Indigenous communities. A substantial table fixes positions by astronomical observation, while barometric profiles describe the changing elevation along the journey. The contrast between this closely observed route and the sparsely mapped surrounding country captures the limits of American geographical knowledge before the Gold Rush.
