Published in 1939, its Istituto Geografico Militare contour base is overprinted with numerous red downhill ski routes, flagged starting points, blue-shaded ski grounds and the access approach from Selva. Labelled photographic panoramas frame the plan, identifying Ciampinoi, Sass Rigais, the Puez plateau, the Torri di Sella and Cima Boè; one photograph also marks the funivia near Ciampinoi. The sheet thus performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—route planning and immediate recognition of mountain terrain—but keeps them as separate visual systems. Produced just as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a particularly attractive transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. The series legend’s slittovia was a now-obsolete cable-hauled passenger sledge, winched uphill before chairlifts and surface lifts took over.
