Ningpo was one of five ports opened by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, but Shanghai’s stronger capital, shipping and inland communications drew away much of Zhejiang’s silk and tea trade. Dennys’s 1867 plan records the aftermath of the Taiping occupation in 1861 and refugee movement in 1862, when Chinese streets expanded on the North Bank under foreign naval protection. Daily steam services linked Ningpo and Shanghai by 1865; green tea, particularly for America, and silk remained the principal export prospects.
