The “Old Factory Site” marks the Thirteen Factories destroyed in 1856, while the “Shamien Site” records the relocation of foreign trade after the Arrow War and Anglo-French occupation of 1857–61. Selected in 1859, Shamien’s mudflats became an artificial concession island divided between Britain and France; British lots were auctioned in 1861 and the Consulate erected in 1865. Dennys recorded foreign trade falling from $34.6 million in 1860 to $21.4 million in 1865 as Shanghai and the Yangtze ports expanded. His 1867 plan updates Daniel Vrooman’s circa-1855 manuscript survey, made using Chinese assistants and converts who paced and described streets barred to foreigners. Separate examples are scarce: our research located one dealer offering and two 2010 records apparently relating to one further sheet. This copy has extensive losses and splitting, brittle, flaking paper and old rice-paper repairs no longer adhering; its severely compromised condition is reflected in the price.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/fr/products/plan-of-the-city-of-canton-large-guangzhou-city-plan-dennys-1867-old-map-p-8-007052
