On an Istituto Geografico Militare contour base, red downhill ski routes and flagged starting points spread through the terrain around Castione, Bratto, Monte Pora and the Giogo della Presolana; blue marks the access roads and shaded ski grounds, while a single green slittovia rises near the pass. Labelled photographic panoramas around the plan identify the surrounding peaks and help the skier translate the conventional map into the mountain landscape. The design thus performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—route planning and visual recognition—but keeps them in separate components. Produced just as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a compelling transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. The slittovia is particularly revealing: a now-obsolete cable-hauled passenger sledge, winched uphill before chairlifts and surface lifts displaced it. Construction of Presolana’s two-sledge installation began in 1938; contemporary accounts called it Bergamo province’s first lift.
