Rolls was a pioneering figure in both motoring and aviation: in 1903 he won the Gordon Bennett Gold Medal for the longest single balloon flight; in 1907 he became the second Briton to ascend in an aeroplane; and in 1910 he achieved the first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel by air.
