Lacey’s engraved views of the capital’s buildings and monuments, with the Crystal Palace given pride of place at the foot of the border and marked again on the plan itself, on its original site in Hyde Park. John Tallis published it in the year of the Exhibition, and it shows the metropolis its visitors found: streets, railways and docks threading a dense centre that gives way to fields around the growing suburbs, with Regent’s Park, the Isle of Dogs and the Millbank Penitentiary, on the site of the present Tate Britain, all prominent.
