It was open farmland until 1908, when it was transformed to host the Franco-British Exhibition and the 1908 London Olympic Games. The vast exhibition complex—soon dubbed the Great White City—took its name from the fibrous plaster façades of its pavilions, whose brilliant white surfaces evoked classical marble. The site was reused almost continuously for major international exhibitions until the outbreak of the First World War. At its centre stood White City Stadium, purpose-built for the Olympics and among the largest sporting venues in the world at the time; it later witnessed the 5000-metre world record in 1954 and the mile world record in 1957, before being demolished in 1985. Little of the grand exhibition landscape survives today, aside from the line of Wood Lane and the former Metropolitan Railway (now the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines). The southern portion of the view is now occupied by the former BBC Television Centre, while the viewpoint lies roughly above today’s Westfield London.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-8-006532a_178bcf01-0931-4e14-b662-dbbd7017f724.jpg?v=1770322478
https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/fr/products/white-city-shepherd-s-bush-franco-british-exhibition-bird-s-eye-view-1908-map-p-8-006532
