Greenwood, Christopher & John

Greenwood was a firm of London map publishers which specialised in large-scale maps of English counties. The firm was established by Christopher Greenwood (1786-1855), who was joined from 1821 by his brother John Greenwood (fl. 1821-1840). The Greenwoods were born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, of which town Christopher became Surveyor before moving to London in 1818. Between 1817 and 1830 they produced a series of splendid large-scale folding maps of most of the English counties based on their own surveys. Their Atlas of the Counties of England (c.1834) was beautifully engraved and decorated with large vignettes of prominent buildings of each county. The maps were engraved on steel. The firm published maps under numerous imprints including Fowler, Greenwood & Co.; C. Greenwood & Co.; Greenwood, Pringle & Co.; C & J Greenwood; Sharp, Greenwood & Fowler.
