"Northern hemisphere on the plane of the horizon of London". THOMSON 1830 map

Price: £223.99

TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Northern hemisphere, projected on the plane of the horizon of London'

A large map centred on London. The map was published at a time when Africa's internal geography was little understood. In common with many 19th century maps, this shows the non-existent Mountains of Kong running west-east from present-day Guinea to Ethiopia. The "supposed course" of the Niger river is shown running east to the area of Lake Chad and then south where it becomes a tributary of the Congo River (in fact it flows to the sea much further north, in Nigeria)
