TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Plan for Extension of South Western Railway, with Station on Thames, on Site of present Charing Cross Bridge'

At the time of the publication of the map, various proposals to provide a railway terminus into the West End of London for lines running to the south were being considered by extending existing rail lines north over Hungerford Bridge. This plan shows a proposal for a "Station on Thames" spanning Hungerford Bridge. Charing Cross station, designed by Sir John Hawkshaw, was eventually built to the north of the river on the site of the Hungerford Market and opened on 11 January 1864.

Mr. Price Prichard Baly was a civil engineer and a pupil of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, in whose office he made the calculations for the Clifton and the Hungerford suspension bridges, and he subsequently acted as Resident Engineer for the construction of the latter. He was involved in the construction of railways in Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Georgia and Russia. He surveyed and designed ports on the Black Sea, at Baku & Madras, and piers at Bournemouth, Folkestone, Ostend and Blankenberg. He advised Sir Charles Barry in the reconstruction of Westminster bridge and other iron structures.
