After most inhabitants of Koliwada evacuated to a temporary camp on 11 February 1906, investigators placed guinea-pigs inside the houses to detect infected rat fleas. The dated points trace the spread of infection through the village until April. Conducted during the Third Plague Pandemic, the experiment provided striking house-by-house evidence that apparently empty buildings could remain dangerous because of fleas associated with infected rats. Originally published in the Journal of Hygiene in 1907 and reissued by Cambridge University Press in 1911, this map formed part of the Indian plague investigations, which supplied systematic experimental and epidemiological proof of the rat–flea–human chain of infection in bubonic plague.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/products/3rd-plague-pandemic-mumbai-bombay-sion-village-guinea-pig-deaths-dot-map-1911-p-6-112093
