The village was divided into manageable blocks of approximately 20 to 50 buildings, while buildings and individual family dwellings were numbered and linked to census cards recording inhabitants’ names, ages, sex and caste. This unusually precise social and topographical survey allowed plague events to be traced to particular households. The investigation took place during the Third Plague Pandemic, which had reached Bombay in 1896 and caused recurrent epidemics throughout India.
