Its symbols distinguish rats proved to have plague from decomposed or mummified specimens whose infection could not be established. The plotted findings reveal the movement and persistence of the rat epizootic through the houses and lanes of this district, now within Mumbai. The investigation formed part of the scientific response to the Third Plague Pandemic, which reached Bombay in 1896, and helped demonstrate that human bubonic plague depended upon infection among rats and transmission by their fleas. Originally published in the Journal of Hygiene in 1907 and reissued by Cambridge University Press in 1911, this map formed part of the Indian plague investigations, which supplied systematic experimental and epidemiological proof of the rat–flea–human chain of infection in bubonic plague.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/products/3rd-plague-pandemic-mumbai-bombay-sion-village-koliwada-rats-found-dot-map-1911-p-6-112096
