Numerous plotted observations document sustained epidemic activity across the district’s tightly packed streets and buildings during one of the principal months of the outbreak. Bombay, now Mumbai, had been struck by the Third Plague Pandemic in 1896 and thereafter experienced recurrent seasonal bubonic plague. By comparing the location of rat infection with human disease, investigators helped demonstrate the central role of rat fleas in transmission. The map combines an unusually detailed plan of the historic Fort district with an important early application of spatial epidemiology.
