King (1842–1901), appointed geologist-in-charge at only twenty-five and later the first Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, oversaw what Rumsey calls a “magnificent” atlas: a pioneering attempt to map the American West in one broad continuous cross-section. This geological map follows the survey west from Bovine, Utah, across the Nevada Plateau to Argenta, Nevada. It records the eastern and central Nevada high country in colour-coded formations, with the two lower cross-sections helping explain the relation between mountain blocks, plateaux, valleys and mineral-bearing ground.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/products/40th-parallel-survey-map-iv-nevada-plateau-geological-clarence-king-1876-p-9-001052
