King (1842–1901), appointed geologist-in-charge at only twenty-five and later the first Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, oversaw what Rumsey calls a “magnificent” atlas: a pioneering attempt to map the American West in one broad continuous cross-section. The fifth topographical map covers western Nevada from Argenta to the Pyramid Lake region and the Lake Tahoe frontier with California.
