Captured by British forces in August 1841, Amoy became one of the five ports opened by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. Kulangsu, occupied by British troops until 1845, became the principal foreign residential quarter, with a British consulate, missions and cemetery; its formal International Settlement followed only in 1903. Dennys counted about 115 foreign residents in 1865, when 802 vessels entered and imports reached about $13 million against $2.7 million of exports. Tea, sugar and tobacco went out, while cotton goods, rice and opium came in. Steam services linked Hong Kong, Swatow, Amoy and Foochow, giving this small community extensive commercial connections. The chart predates the hybrid architecture that later transformed Gulangyu. Dennys used Captain Richard Collinson’s China Pilot for navigation; the chart probably reflects that hydrographic tradition, although its precise source remains unidentified.
