Hugh Johnson’s circular polar map, issued in 1856 before Fullarton’s better-known decorative version. The chart looks inward from the Arctic Circle towards a still largely unmapped polar centre. A track-line indicates the North-West Passage associated with McClure and HMS Investigator, although the expedition did not sail the route continuously; other voyages are recorded chiefly through discoveries, place names, dates, wintering places and farthest-point annotations rather than complete plotted tracks. Arrows distinguish the Gulf Stream and polar currents, while a dotted band marks the northern limit of forest growth. The inscription below acknowledges the results of Dr Kane’s expedition supplied through the Royal Geographical Society. Covering the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Alaska and Siberia, the sheet records polar knowledge at the moment McClure’s achievement was still fresh.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-6-112126a_0a7c577d-81a6-4e70-8393-3bed4a016fa3.jpg?v=1787249406
https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/products/arctic-regions-showing-the-north-west-passage-j-hugh-johnson-fullarton-1856-map-p-6-112126
