Yeddo, Yokohama, Miako, Osaca, Nagasaki and Hakodadi appear with the principal straits. The 1858 commercial treaties brought Kanagawa\/Yokohama, Nagasaki and Hakodadi into regular foreign trade. In 1867 Dennys identified these as the only three Japanese ports with substantially occupied foreign settlements; travel beyond prescribed treaty limits remained restricted. The chart therefore records the limited access through which foreign merchants and travellers encountered Japan during the Bakumatsu crisis, only months before the shogunate surrendered power.
