Published in 1939 by the Istituto Italiano d’Arti Grafiche for the Milan branch of the Reale Automobile Club d’Italia, it uses an Istituto Geografico Militare contour base overprinted with red downhill ski routes and flagged starting points, blue-shaded ski grounds, the blue access road from Montgenèvre through Claviere to Cesana, and green slittovia and funivia lines. Labelled winter photographs around the plan help the skier recognise the surrounding peaks. The design therefore performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—accurate route planning and intuitive reading of mountain terrain—but keeps them separate. Produced just as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a fascinating transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. Especially evocative is the slittovia, a now-obsolete cable-hauled passenger sledge, winched over the snow before chairlifts and surface lifts took over.
