Darwin adapted an 1835 base map by C. Gressier, translated its names, converted longitude to Greenwich and overlaid evidence assembled from Admiralty charts, voyages and correspondence. The result was integral to a major scientific argument. Darwin supplied the first comprehensive, testable explanation of how fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls were successive stages in one process: coral grows upward near the surface while volcanic islands and the surrounding ocean floor slowly subside, leaving ring-shaped reefs after the central land has disappeared. The map uses global distribution to connect reef form with crustal movement, making an invisible geological history legible at a glance.
