The sheet shows the London Central Meat Market surrounded and underpinned by cold stores and railway goods depots, with Grand Avenue, East Poultry Avenue, Lindsey Street and Long Lane among the streets around it. The sidings beneath the market closed in the 1960s, and in 2024 the City abandoned the move to Dagenham, with traders staying until at least 2028. Fabric, which has been in the renovated Metropolitan Cold Stores on Charterhouse Street since 1999, stands for the nightlife that followed. The LCC Smithfield Technical Institute taught butchery and refrigeration until it closed in the 1980s, and across Charterhouse Square the Charterhouse almshouse opened to the public in 2017. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and it carries a latest dated correction of September 1969.
