The Dutch East India Company established the fortress on Tayouan sandbank from 1624 to control trade with China and Japan. Koxinga captured it after the siege of 1661–62, ending Dutch rule in Taiwan. Earthquakes, reuse and abandonment subsequently reduced it to part of the keep and broken outer walls. Yet the ruins remained essential to shipping: Taiwan-fu’s harbour had silted until the city lay five miles inland, and mariners used the fort’s conspicuous banyan tree as a landfall for Anping roadstead. Later silting joined the former island to the mainland; restoration and reconstruction created today’s Anping Old Fort. The plan preserves the site before these interventions. Dennys drew on Robert Swinhoe’s observations of Formosa; the draughtsman is unnamed.
