Haviland turned official statistics into a six-class choropleth: arterial red marked mortality below average, while venous blue represented mortality above average. The heart-disease study first appeared in 1871; incorporated into the expanded 1875 atlas, this nearly metre-wide sheet belongs among the earliest detailed national maps devoted to a non-epidemic cause of death. Haviland interpreted the concentration of mortality in low-lying, poorly ventilated valleys as evidence that elevation, sunshine and prevailing winds influenced heart disease. The geographical comparison was innovative, although the causal conclusion did not adequately allow for confounding social and medical factors. The complete work survives at King’s College London and in the Royal Collection.
