It records the island only a generation after its cession in 1842 and six years after Britain acquired the Kowloon peninsula: Victoria is already a dense mercantile capital, while much of the island remains topographically dominant and thinly settled. The 1865 census recorded 125,594 inhabitants, including a large boat population and just over 2,000 Europeans and Americans; 2,254 vessels of 1,013,748 tons entered in 1864. The harbour channel, anchorages and coastal settlements supplied practical intelligence for merchants, residents and travellers. Separate examples of this map remain highly elusive: our search found one commercial sale in 2010, but no further dealer or auction record since then.

https://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/products/island-of-hongkong-hong-kong-kowloon-surrounding-waters-dennys-1867-old-map-p-8-007050
