Japan’s complex multi-metallic currency posed practical difficulties for foreign merchants and travellers. Mexican and other foreign dollars circulated in treaty settlements but became less useful beyond them; Dennys treated the itziboo as the everyday standard and recorded a three-boo piece introduced for transactions with foreigners. The opening to overseas trade exposed a severe mismatch between Japanese and international gold–silver values, prompting bullion movements, repeated recoinage and unstable exchange. This 1867 engraving appeared just after the 1866 tariff settlement reduced duties to five per cent, capturing the monetary pressures accompanying Japan’s opening.
