Racecourse, merchant and naval anchorages, foundry and steam works stand close to cotton fields, orchards and farmland now absorbed by central Shanghai. Opened under the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, Shanghai received its British consul in 1843. The British settlement occupied the land between Yangkingpang and Soochow Creek, with the French concession south and American Hongkew north. British and American municipalities united in 1863, although the map retains their separate labels. The Taiping crisis brought refugees and rapid building, followed by property contraction as refugees departed. Dennys’s 1867 plan captures Shanghai becoming the shipping and financial centre of the Yangtze system, concentrating tea, silk and cotton exports and distributing foreign manufactures inland by steam.
