The American settlement lies across the creek and the French concession beyond Yangkingpang. These proposals record the engineering of a waterfront originally developed on marshland. Foreign ratepayers organised roads, drainage, bridges, policing and lighting, while the Huangpu towing path became the Bund, lined with mercantile premises and landing places. British and American municipalities united in 1863, making “British settlement” in the title a survival from the formative years. Published in 1867, the plan shows infrastructure catching up with Shanghai’s growth as an outlet for Yangtze tea and silk and an entrepôt for imports. Dennys’s plan appears to adapt Shanghai Municipal Council surveys of 1864–66, with projected works and Pootung information.
