Its numbered and lettered key identifies Government House, the Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, Central Prison, Pedder’s Wharf clock tower, the Naval Yard, Jardine Matheson’s premises and the newly established Mint. At the eastern, left-hand end, a dotted street grid extends into Causeway Bay beside the Mint, apparently showing a projected layout for reclaimed land. Dennys records that the Mint’s own site required the bay to be filled. Happy Valley’s racecourse occupies former wet cultivation, while blue water, green open ground and pink buildings distinguish harbour, hills and city. The colony had 125,594 inhabitants in 1865, and over one million tons of shipping entered its free port in 1864. Much of this waterfront now lies inland behind later reclamation. Dennys’s 1867 plan appears to adapt official property and street surveys maintained from 1860.
