Open railways and canals are separately keyed, while numerous towns and coastal features provide the geographic setting for the conflict. Japan’s ultimatum of 15 August demanded that Germany relinquish Tsingtao; war followed on 23 August, the principal landings at the end of the month, and the garrison surrendered on 7 November.
