Severely damaged by Taiping forces in 1853, the city revived after opening to foreign trade in March 1861. Merchants expected Jiangxi and Anhui tea to reach this second Yangtze treaty port through Poyang Lake. Dennys described a British settlement roughly 500 yards by 250, divided by a central road and cross-road into four blocks of seven lots, with a Bund, timber revetment and landing jetties. By 1866 only twenty to twenty-five foreigners lived there, with eight British houses and three American firms. Tea was effectively the sole foreign export, but the site lay above the Poyang outlet and restrictions on lake steam towage frustrated expectations. Nevertheless, 1866 saw the first sailing vessel load tea directly for London.
